Thorn’s success as a coach comes from his exposure to a wide variety of industries, as well as his experience in numerous human resource roles. Throughout his career, Thorn has been lauded for his business insights and his success when it comes to creating innovative designs. The most recent example of this was during his 17-year tenure as Managing Director at Societe Generale, an international bank based in France, where he designed and directed the “CEO Club,” a year-long leadership development experience for 8 - 12 high-potential “talents” chosen by the CEO. This design, which included a coaching relationship for each club member, was selected for an Innovation Award in Paris and then replicated in Hong Kong, London and Western Europe.

These experiences have given Thorn significant insight into the challenges and developmental opportunities faced by emerging leaders. They now serve as the basis of his consulting business, T W Jenness Consulting & Coaching LLC. Thorn has a BA from Dartmouth College, where he majored in psychology.

Effective coaching

Here are just a few notable client achievements that were attained through coaching:
  • Clarified a new leader’s sense of her newly constituted role that became the basis of being accepted as an important strategic member of the Executive Management team.
  • Redirected a Managing Director’s frustration at not having management authority over members of his trading floor team. Gave an assessment of the Managing Director’s management potential to the head of the trading floor, which ultimately led to the client’s “promotion” to desk head.
  • Increased a client’s confidence in successfully designing and leading workshops in various cities in India, despite never having done this task before. The challenge was intensified by having to do the coaching entirely over Skype.
  • Uncovered unexpected career development opportunities for technology-trained leader, distinguishing between opportunities in Europe as compared to the US and between those in the government sector vs. those in the business world.
